Historical background

Lake Como or "Lario" dates back to the Ice Age.

Shaped in an inverted Y, its two branches extend south towards Lecco and south west towards Como.

Due to a mild climate, which helped trees grow, the Lario has been inhabited since the late prehistoric age.

Como was founded under the Roman colonisation.

The lake gained international fame between 700 - 800 AD, becoming a must-see for travellers and writers as Bourget, De Musset, Stendhal and Flaubert. The most well-known extract is from the famous Manzonian opening of 'Promessi Sposi': "that branch of Lake Como that extends towards the south"
